Bluefield, WV- Joan Akers of Verdun Heights, Bluefield, WV, received her angel wings on Wednesday December 19, 2012 at Bristol Hospice House in Bristol, TN. Born April 11, 1928 in Bluefield, WV, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Hamlin and Ella Rachel Harmon Hamlin. Mrs. Akers was a lifelong resident of Bluefield and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her family and her church were the two most important things in her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Ralph G. Akers in 2002; three brothers, Randolph, Thomas, and Jack Hamlin; and one sister, Betty Myles. Survivors include her children, Michael Akers and wife Dianna of Bluefield, WV, Connie Shrewsbury and husband Scott of Princeton, WV, and Dana Auton and husband Sean of Mebane, NC; four grandchildren, Rachel Shrewsbury, Alex Shrewsbury, Andrew Shrewsbury and wife Robin, and Matthew Auton; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Shrewsbury, Madison Shrewsbury and Devin Shrewsbury; nieces, Debbie Myles and Patricia Smith both of Durham, NC; sister-in-law, Ruble Hamlin of Norton, VA; and brother-in-law, Ronald Akers and wife Betty of Fredericksburg, VA. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Sunday December 23, 2012 from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Jarrett officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
