Horace F. Barger went to be with The Lord on January 22, 2019 after a brief illness. He was born on June 3, 1929 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was one of seven children born to Thelma and James Barger.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Eugenia (Jean) Bazemore Barger; his children, H. Frank Barger, Jr. (Nancy), Diana Barger Meredith (Oren), and Steven Douglas Barger (Jan); seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jerry Barger of Richmond Virginia.
Mr. Barger was a veteran who served in the US Navy from 1945-1950. He met his beloved Jean in 1951 and were married on September 7, 1951. They were married for 67 years and lived briefly in Texas and N.C. before settling in Marion County, Florida.
Mr. Barger was a building contractor who was responsible for several landmark construction sites in the area. He built the first McDonalds in Ocala on Pine Street; the first addition to Munroe Hospital and additions to Shands Teaching Hospital and the University of Florida in Gainesville. He built numerous homes in the Ocala area, many for low income housing recipients. He would build a home with his handshake as a contract and would finance homes himself for those who could not afford a bank loan. He was a fair man and his word was everything to him. He was also know for having a 35 acre pecan grove in Anthony where people could gather their own pecans on an honor system. Mr. Barger was a member of Woodside Baptist Church as well as the Masonic Lodge and Shriners of Ocala.
Arrangements are being handled by the National Cremation Society and internment will be at a later date at The Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida with full military honors.
