Albert Braley was born in upstate New York, probably in Jefferson County. When Albert was a young child, his mother Nancy died. Soon after, his father, who was named either George or Jeremiah, joined a group of neighbors who were moving to western Illinois in wagons. Along the way, the father also died, and the Braley children were divided up among the migrating families. Albert, his brother Byron, and his sister Wealthy were taken in by Elijah Randall and his wife, Nancy (Lisk). The expanded Randall family settled near Monmouth, Illinois, at a farm in Berwick Township.

Albert lived with his adoptive parents until at least 1860. By 1870 he had migrated to Shullsburg, Wisconsin. Albert married Nancy Perrigo there in 1872 and took in her young twins, John and Mary. The family lived in a small house built into the bluff on the south side of the Pecatonica River. Nancy gave birth to two more children between 1872 and 1875, but both were apparently put up for adoption. Nancy had another set of twins, Edwin and Edward, in 1878.

Albert and Nancy left Darlington in 1900 and relocated to the south side of Chicago, living with Edwin and Edward for a few years. Nancy worked as a washerwoman; Albert was unable to work. The twins eventually left the city, but the couple remained. When their circumstances became dire, they were moved to the Oak Forest Infirmary, where Albert died in 1922.
