Leon Dow "Shorty" Ames

Leon Dow "Shorty" Ames, 94 of Chehalis, was welcomed into heaven following a brief bout of pneumonia on Saturday, April 19, 2014. Shorty was born on Aug. 13, 1919 to Henry and Ethel Ames in Mount Dora, N.M. The family moved to Randle, Wash. in 1934.

Shorty served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked for the Lewis County PUD for 37 years and also spent several years working in logging camps in Southeast Alaska. He was a charter member of Bethel Church in Chehalis where he attended faithfully until his death.

Shorty was a humble, soft-spoken man of great integrity. A member of the greatest generation, he understood the value of hard work, loyalty, faith and faithfulness.

Shorty was preceded in death by his siblings, Ernest, Arthur, Alma, Henry and Homer; his bride of 62 years and the love of his life, Rhonda (Green) who passed away in 2004; and a daughter, Patricia who died at birth.

He is survived by five children, Ben (Cheryl) Ames of Doty, Leon (Sandi) Ames of Centralia, Del (Holly) Ames of Chehalis, Vicki (David) Judd of Longview, and Tami (Dan) Wiley of Kalama; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Bethel Church, 132 Kirkland Road, Chehalis, April 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

Donations may be made to Centralia Outreach Center through Destiny Christian Center or the charity of your choice.
