"Eleanor Geneva (London) Blockhus, 85, of Northfield, died on April 21, at Evergreen Lodge, Northfield Retirement Center.

Eleanor was born on Sept. 22, 1926. She grew up in Forest City, and graduated from Waldorf College and finished her bachelor's degree at Augustana College, majoring in music. Eleanor went to Luther College for her elementary education degree and met Harlan Blockhus. They were married on June, 14, 1952. Eleanor taught third grade in Decorah and White Bear Lake Minn., while Harlan attended Luther Seminary.

Eleanor was a devoted pastor's wife as they served a Lutheran parish in Armstrong, and started two mission congregations in Des Moines, and Waverly. In 1979 they moved to Ames, where Eleanor worked as a preschool teacher at Bethesda Lutheran Church, while Harlan worked for Lutheran Social Services. Harlan and Eleanor chose to spend their retired years in Northfield, Minn., starting in 1996, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

They enjoyed an active retired life as members of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Eleanor enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She loved baking, singing, playing the piano, and sewing matching dresses for her young daughters.

She is survived by her four daughters, Julie Larson (David) Rochester, Minn., Joan Blockhus-Morgan (Bill) Sierra Vista, Ariz., Jane Blockhus (Henry Emmons) Northfield and Jill Blockhus (Jefferson Gray) Washington, DC; six grandchildren, Kirstin, Ben and Jon Larson, Eric and Mark Emmons and Will Morgan; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan; her parents, Hans and Julia London; her sisters and brother.

The memorial service was on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield, Minn. Visitation started at 9 a.m.
