GRANGEVILLE -- Longtime Grangeville resident and retired furniture store owner Samuel E. Lindsley died of causes related to age Thursday at the Idaho County Nursing Home at Grangeville. He was 96.He had been a resident of the nursing home since January.He was born Feb. 21, 1902, at Park Rapids, Minn., to Edwin E. and Amelia Fenske Lindsley. His father was a minister, and they moved often.He graduated from Tyler (Minn.) High School and from the South Dakota State University in 1930.He taught school in Troy, Mont., and Ritzville, Wash. In 1930, he moved to Cottonwood, and became principal of Cottonwood High School. He also coached.In 1935, he moved to Grangeville and went into the electrical supply and appliance business.He married Muriel Jones in Grangeville in 1939.He moved to Portland, Ore., and worked in the shipyards for one year.He then purchased a farm in the Fairview area near Grangeville.In 1945, he and his wife opened Lindsley's Furniture Store in Grangeville. He retired from the business in 1967, and in 1973 his son Thomas purchased the store.He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Grangeville and served on the Grangeville City Council. He was a charter member of the Grangeville Lions Club.He was grand marshal of Grangeville Border Days in 1992. He enjoyed sports and was especially fond of high school athletics when his grandchildren participated.He enjoyed fishing, hunting, community events, and was among the first members of the Grangeville Gun Club. He was a supporting member of Syringa General Hospital.At age 90, he served as best man at his grandson's wedding.In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Thomas of Grangeville; two brothers, Donavan of Bolivar, Mo., and Marvin of Renton, Wash.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandsons.Two sisters and a brother died previously.A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Grangeville with the Rev. Joel Aosved officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery at Grangeville.Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Noland-Blackmer Funeral Home at Grangeville.The family suggests memorials be made to Syringa General Hospital or the United Methodist Church of Grangeville.
