James Gardner "Jimmy" Cecil Jr was born on November 7, 1938 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of James Gardner Cecil Sr (1896–1975) and Jane Adelaide (Houston) Cecil (1908–2002).

He attended Overbrook School and Duncan School and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy before serving in the Tennessee Air National Guard and Reserves as a Captain and was a cargo specialist with his crew transporting supplies to military bases stateside and overseas.

Jimmy attended Vanderbilt University and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a political science degree. After college, he taught and coached soccer at Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee, before returning to Nashville to work for Third National Bank. Then he was a paralegal and was hired into management by Holiday Inn in Nashville and after several years was transferred to Decatur, Alabama.

In later years, he worked for NARCOG delivering meals and loved the people he served. And, along the way he was married to Joyce (Stone) Clemons.

Living in Decatur, Alabama, Jimmy was 80 years old when he passed away peacefully on January 17, 2019.

He was preceded in death by his parents, while survivors included his wife, a married Cecil daughter and a married Clemons Daughter, a Cecil son, two Clemons sons and a Clemons daughter-in-law, six grandchildren, a great-grandson, sister, a niece, a nephew and a number of other family members and friends.

Celebration of Life Services were held at Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur, Alabama, and burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery.

Jim Cecil played defensive back for the Nashville Rangers Soccer Club in the early days of Nashville soccer. He played football for Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville. He served as a loadmaster for the Tennessee Air National Guard for many years.
