Memphis, TN - David Michael Alperin, 85, passed away on January 24, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 24, 1933 in Memphis to Mose and Beatrice Katz Alperin. As a lifelong Memphian, David graduated from Central High School in 1951 and then attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation, he joined his father at M. Alperin & Sons wholesale dry goods. In 1970, he opened the Memphis institution, David's Home Fashions. David's store was open for 29 years before closing its doors in 1999 upon David's retirement to Florida. David was an avid sports fan his whole life, from a star shot-put player in high school to attending Grizzlies games court side with his dear friends. He loved playing tennis and golf throughout his adult years, as well as watching basketball and football games. As a huge supporter of all things Memphis, he was heavily involved in Memphis State sporting events and the ABA Tams. He was incredibly passionate about the Jewish community in Memphis. David was a strong supporter of multiple Jewish charities, including the Memphis Jewish Home, Jewish Community Center and Memphis Jewish Federation, where he served on the board. In addition to his longtime partner and best friend Sandra Goldstein, he is survived by his daughters, Liz Alperin Simonian (Rouben) and Carolyn Alperin Bender, as well as his granddaughters, Lauren Bender and Margo Bender. Though David had no siblings, his cousin Stanley Wender was a beloved brother to him; he and his wife, Razelle, always made David a part of their large, loving family. David and his family give special thanks to Cheryl Terry and Christy Pryor who helped make his life comfortable and pleasant during his final years. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 25 at Baron Hirsch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Memphis Jewish Home or a charity of the donor's choice. (Published in The Commercial Appeal on Jan. 26, 2019)
