Helen Mae Riley
MAY 14, 1929 ~ JANUARY 14, 2019 (AGE 89)

Helen Mae Riley, 89, of Stafford, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday, January 14, 2019.

Helen was born on May 14, 1929 in Alexandria, Va. and she spent the first part of her life in Prince William County, Va. Later she moved to Stafford County.

Helen had a beautiful smile, warm eyes, loved people, and was always for the underdog. She was a naturally curious person, a lifelong learner with a wide variety of interests. Helen started as a young wife and mother, cooking on a woodstove and drawing water from a well. She loved being in her kitchen, cooking and canning, and making wonderful meals for her family. Helen dearly loved sitting down with her family to eat crabs during the summer and fall months. She enjoyed baseball, was a Nats fan and loved to watch the World Series. Helen collected antique glass and enjoyed “antiquing” with her sister, Ellen. She was an avid reader, especially of the Bible, history, and mysteries. Helen enjoyed maps and working crossword puzzles. She loved all types of music including jazz, classical, rock and roll, old country music, and Frank Sinatra. Helen also sang, played the piano, and the guitar.

Helen’s most cherished accomplishment was her daughter, Tracey. Tracey was born with Downs Syndrome and was given a very limited lifespan. However, with her mother’s vigilant care, patient instruction, and gentle encouragement, Tracey was able to live a long, full life, well into her late thirties. Tracey and Helen were inseparable.

Helen’s strong will and determination served her well when she began advocating for Tracey to have access to educational opportunities in the early 1970’s. She and other families helped Stafford County establish its first Special Education classes and handicapped bus transportation.

Helen was a Jehovah’s Witness for over 46 years. She loved to talk with people about the Bible and God’s Kingdom. She looked for the good in people, touched many lives with her caring ways, and fiercely loved her family. Helen will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her children, Fred L. Randall, Jr (Velma), Lois A. Carter, Mary Frances Adams (Bruce), and Richard S. Riley (Venna); siblings Ellen M. Liming and Donald S. Baggott (Charlotte); grandchildren Wendy Ferguson (Jimmy), Freddie L. Randall III (Lisa), and Emily C. Mathias (Steve); great-grandchildren Robert Lloyd, Brittany Bright, Hannah, Abby, Benjamin, and Julianna Mathias, and Molly and Ethan Randall; great-great-grandchildren Addyson Lloyd and Emily Meade; nephews Glenn Liming, Steve Baggott; niece Karen Clevinger; and her wonderful caregiver Chan Prakash.

She is preceded in death by her parents Selwyn and Glenna Baggott; daughter Tracey Riley; brother Thomas R. Baggot; nephew Donald C. Baggot; and former husband, Richard E. Riley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. on Friday, February 1 at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford.

A memorial service will be held at 1 P.M. on Saturday, February 2 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 939 Ramoth Church Rd., Fredericksburg, VA 22406 which is located in Stafford. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
