In looking at the census records, it appears that Charles worked for the railroad his entire life. In the 1910 Census for Monroe County, Iowa, he was a single 19-year-old, still living with his parents, and he was working as a section hand for the railway. In the 1920, 1930, and 1940 census records, he and Lulu were living in Galesburg, Illinois, and he was working as a brakeman on the railroad.
