William Roberts was the son of Sarah Magness (1772-1828) and John Morris Roberts (1767-1847).

William was born in Cleveland Co., NC, September 11, 1796; died in Cleveland Co., NC, October 4, 1865; buried at Roberts' Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina (body moved to Sunset Cemetery, Section 18/21, Cleveland Co., NC, when Roberts' Cemetery was flooded for Moss Lake).

He married first in Lincoln Co., NC, April 2, 1839, Mary M. Fullenwider, #196106841. Mary was born about 1794; died August 27, 1847.

Mary M. Roberts, aged 52 years, d. August 27, 1847, is buried next to William Roberts at Sunset Cemetery, Section 18/21.

He married second in North Carolina about 1851 Catherine Dicey Wray, #8709517. Catherine was born in Cleveland Co., NC, July 30, 1830; died in Cleveland Co., NC, January 18, 1905; buried at Sunset Cemetery, Shelby, Cleveland Co., NC.

Catharine married second about 1867 A. John Borders, #8709525, who died March 24, 1888; buried at Sunset Cemetery, Shelby, Cleveland Co., NC. John served in Co. F., 34th NC Infantry,CSA.

William was known as "Captain" and "Squire Billy". The 1850 Cleveland County Census lists him owing 7500 acres of land and thirty three slaves. His land was between Shelby and King's Mountain. He was a farmer and manufacturer. He was one of three men in the county who had iron works in 1850.

William opened one of the first private schools after the Revolutionary War. He was a charter member and deacon of First Baptist Church.

William and Catherine had a son:
