He was a Blacksmith, farmer, and Cooper by trade. He met Mary Ann Neel (Neal) who was also known as Polly Ann, and they were married on 20 November 1827 in Sumner County, Tennessee. James and Mary Ann lived in Dry Fork, Sumner County, Tennessee, where two children were born to them: Clifton Smith, born 15 September 1828 and Sarah Ann, born 10 October 1830. From there they moved to Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, where a third child, Edmund Thomas, was born 30 November 1833. Soon afterward they moved to Adams County, Illinois, and four more children were born to them: David Henry, born 16 March 1835; Jane Neal, born 4 August 1837; Isaac Austin, born 25 December 1840; and Eliza Elizabeth (also known as Mary Ann America), born 4 August 1843. It was while they lived in Adams County that they heard about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At this time part of the family was baptized, Clifton being the first on 15 January 1842. Mary Ann, the mother, was next in May 1842 and James Green followed on 15 December 1842. By the year 1856 all the other children were baptized into the church. The family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois and, along with the other saints, were cruelly persecuted. They were closely associated with the Prophet Joseph Smith. It was in the year 1846 that they started the exodus with the pioneers to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Delilah Charilla was born on 4 August 18...
