Bettye Jean Everley Schroerlucke, 88, of Louisville, died January 10, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 2, 1930, in Ceralvo, Ohio County, Kentucky, to Margret and Arthur Everley. When she was a young teen, Bettye's family moved to Louisville, where she graduated from Shawnee High School in 1947. Bettye entered Kentucky Wesleyan College where she met Gilbert Schroerlucke who became the love of her life. They married in 1948. Gilbert became a minister and they started their journey as a United Methodist clergy family.
Bettye became a strong, supportive minister's wife over the span of several moves across the state. With each move, Bettye made the parsonage a home and enhanced the community with her time, talents and spirit.
With a special interest in early childhood education, Bettye established and directed a day care center for low-income families at West Broadway United Methodist Church in Louisville. While raising a family, she continued to take college classes, and eventually earned bachelor and master degrees in education. Bettye was a classroom teacher for 19 years at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Louisville.
She brought joy to others through her love of music and singing and in her artistic creations, which often reflected her love of nature. Her positive, cheerful outlook and gentle kindness will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. Bettye's abiding presence is her gift to all of us.
She will be remembered by her husband of 70 years, Gilbert, and her children: Keith Schroerlucke (Sandra) of Madison, Wisconsin; Kaye McSpadden (Bruce) of Indianapolis; and in Louisville, Kathy Schroerlucke, Kim Schroerlucke (Jeanne Thompson), and Kelly Schroerlucke (Keith Lucas). She loved and cherished her 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, two brothers, and a sister
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 13, at 3pm at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd, Louisville KY.
