The daughter of African Americans Arthur and Frances Ann Hancock. Her father, who was born in Virginia ca. 1796, was, according to the 1830 U.S. census - Slave Schedule, a "Free Negro" and owner of three slaves, while residing at Breggs Point near Norfolk. Per his July 1849 death record he was a "Water Man" who died of Cholera at age 53. Five of his known children, including Samuel, Eliza, Sarah, Anna, and Maria at one time or another found their way to Boston.

Sarah married Joseph A. Churchill at Norfolk, VA on Oct. 1, 1851 and gave birth in 1856 to their son Charles B. The family was in Boston before their son Arthur was born in 1859. Another son Joseph A. was born at Boston in 1862 and died there in 1864. The 1880 census indicates Sarah was a widow and her sons were employed as waiters, thus her husband Joseph, who had worked as a Huckster, died between the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

In what would be the second marriage for both, Sarah, who was a 48-year-old Boarding House Keeper, wed Lyman Lawrie, a 50-year-old Cook who was born in Portsmouth, VA, at Boston on Feb. 17, 1887. No date of death has been found for Lyman Lawrie, however he died prior to 1901.

Sarah was listed as the widow of Joseph Churchill in Boston death records when she died of heart disease at age 62 years and 21 days at her home located at 8 Lindall Place in Boston’s West End.
