John Beard died Dec. 19, 2018 in Mountain View, Calif., of cardiovascular disease. He was attended by his wife, children and brother.
John was born in Astoria, Ore., where his father Jack was a naval officer. He grew up in Seattle until age five, when his family moved to Portland. He attended Central Catholic HS, where he played tennis, a game he enjoyed for decades. John graduated in engineering from Santa Clara University and obtained an MBA from U of Washington. While at Santa Clara he met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Warren. They married in 1969 and later settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. John worked in sales and market development for a company that made high-tech assistive technology allowing people with blindness to access printed materials. Complications from John's Type 1 diabetes included a stroke in 2000, and he suffered a subsequent decline in health.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Lisa (Scott Havill); son, Jamie (Jennifer Becker); grandchildren, Liam and Eva; and brother, James (Janet). He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Betty.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at St. Thomas More Church in Portland, with interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery to follow.
