The second of ten children born to Thomas D. and Abbie (Danforth) Brackett, his father was born at Madison, ME and mother at Watertown, MA. His family was recorded at Starks, ME in the 1860 Census where his father labored on his own father's farm. His mother may have moved to Massachusetts, and this is pure speculation, after her husband enlisted as a Private in Co. E of the 15th Maine Infantry on Dec. 10, 1861, in order to receive state financial aide as a soldier's wife, or simply to be closer to her biological family. Her husband served with the 15th Maine until Jan. 1, 1865 when he was transferred to Co. B of the 30th Maine Infantry from Jan. 1, 1865 to June 29, 1865.

Augustus, his mother, and two siblings, including a brother Orestes, born at Boston Sept. 15, 1864, were residing at 1 Plympton Ct. in Boston's South End when Augustus died at four years of age, a week after contracting Small Pox. He was one of five to die from the virus in the city of Boston that week according to the City Auditor.
