By 1910, James William and Mary Kate joined the run for land in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). James Williams' parents went to New Mexico Territory.

James W. McDonald, age 33, marr 13 yrs, farmer, born Tx; -Mary K., wife, age 30, 8 child, 3 living, b. Tx; -Marion W., son, age 10, farm labor, born Tx; -Thelma V., dau, age 6, born Ind Terr; -Leola, dau, age 1 6/12, born Ind Terr. Their ninth child, Moses B., was born Jan 22, 1911. In 1912, Mary Kate was stricken with spinal meningitis and their house quarantined. Eight year old Thelma Vester remembered the day her mother couldn't get out of bed. She took ingredients in to the bedside and her dying mother taught her how to make biscuits. After Kate's death, James William put his four children on the train and sent them to his parents. His father met the train in Tucumcari and took them to Plain where he was postmaster and operated a grocery store. James William put by his crop and joined his children in New Mexico. He went back in the spring, put in and harvested a crop before selling the farm. James William married Nellie L. Waterfield and they had four children. During his life time, James William saw New Mexico Territory become a state and his country engage in two World Wars. His home was in Portales, New Mexico, when he died, December of 1969. He was laid to rest among relatives and neighbors in the little Plain Cemetery between Forrest and Grady in New Mexico. The cemetery is about all that remains of a once thriving community.
