BILLERICA - Joseph F. Carney, 81, a resident of Billerica, died Thursday, January 3, 2019, at his home following a brief illness. He spent most of his life in Lowell, moving to Billerica thirteen years ago. He was the beloved husband of Janice C. (Duffy) Carney, whom he loved dearly and recently celebrated their Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary.

He was born in Lowell on July 23, 1937, a son of the late Joseph Carney Sr. and the late Teresa (Ennion) Carney. He received his education in Lowell Catholic and public schools.

Joe retired from Raytheon in 1995 after forty years of service. He was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1505, and held many positions within the Union leadership. He was a longtime friend of Bill W. and could be found helping others struggling with addiction. During his retirement years, he worked part time at Tewksbury State Hospital Detox Center.

His life passion was his family. He enjoyed large family gatherings and cooking dinner for them. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching the New England Patriots. Summer fishing trips to Lake Ontario with his boys were always an adventure he looked forward to. He also coached baseball with the AYO and Babe Ruth Leagues for many years.

Joe was a loving and devoted father, husband, grandfather, and brother. In addition to his beloved wife, Janice, he is survived by his six sons, James Carney and his wife, Diane of Lowell, Joseph Carney of Nashua, NH, John Carney and his fiancé, Linda Snow of Lowell, Jeffrey Carney and his wife, Gina of Chelmsford, Jay Carney and his wife, Laura, of Dracut, and Jason Carney and his wife, Tracy of Lowell. He also leaves his dear sisters, Mary Joyce of Lowell, and Sheila Gendreau and her husband, Arthur, of Florida. In addition to his many nieces and nephews, he was also a proud grandfather of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sister Janice (Carney) Clement of Lowell.
