John August Erickson was born December 4, 1874, at Stockholm, Sweden. He finished his high school there at the age of 17 and then enlisted in the Army of the Calvary, where he served 4 years. The last two years in the Army he served as an instructor. He came to the United States in 1896 as a sailor to Boston, Massachusetts where he continued his education by attending night school. In 1902, John homesteaded in the Blackwater Township, North Dakota, which was located 20 miles west of Garrison. He was one of the first settlers in the area and took an active part in organizing the township and the community of Garrison. He was an active member of the Nonpartisan League and he served four terms as a Representative in the State Legislature in Bismarck. Politics were one of his great interests. In 1908, August married Emily McIntyre of Prince Edward Island, Canada, in Washburn. She died in 1938. Together they had 6 children: Mabel, Grace, Irene, Earl, Stella, and John M. In 1940, John decided to leave the family farm. He then worked as an Auditor for the State Land Department in Bismarck for a number of years. He then returned to Garrison, where he owned and operated the Garrison Trading Post. He lived the last three years of his life in Bismarck with his daughter, Mabel. John died on May 29, 1962, at the age of 87.
