He was born in Saxony, about an hour from Eisenach. He came to America as a Hessian soldier and then served with the Americans. He initially had no trade after the army. He joined the Moravian community and married Barbara Christmann, daughter of Jacob Christmann and Anna Barbara Kraemer.

Johann(es) was not far Salem, getting stone for his house in Bethabara, when he fell from his wagon and broke his neck. He left a widow and young children.
