Mrs. Abbie H. Chaffee, 101, of Main Street in the Higganum section, relief supervisor at Middlesex Memorial Hospital, Middletown, during the influenza epidemic in 1918, died Saturday in a Chester convalescent home. She was the widow of Arthur D. Chaffee.

Born in Amenia, N.Y., she lived in Higganum since 1920. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Middletown. A night supervisor at St. Luke's Home in Middletown, she also had been a hospital inspector for the state welfare department during the 1930s and '40s. She was graduated from Ingleside Academy in New Milford, and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and Sloane Maternity Hospital in New York City.

She leaves a son, Arthur D. Chaffee Jr. of Woodbury; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Parmelee of Haddam, Mrs. Fredrick Marion Lafage of Watertown and Mrs. Barbara Negralle of Old Saybrook, 10 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Private funeral services are Tuesday at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Middletown, with the Rev. James V. Edmondson, minister of the Haddam Congregational Church, Haddam, officiating. Burial will be in Higganum-Burr Cemetery in Higganum. There are no calling hours.
