Walter James Roark was born in Cherokee County Texas, son of Franklin Reed Roark and grandson of William Roark. Franklin Reed Roark died of injuries suffered in the Civil War when Walter was 2 years old. Walter was raised by his mother, Susannah Power, and his step father, Edwin Forest Coon in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Walter married Frances Louisa Richardson December 2, 1880 in Cherokee County, and they had eight children. Seven lived to adulthood. He was a successful farmer and lived about 5 miles east of Alto on the road that is now called Texas Highway 21.

Walter died at the age of 72 while plowing in the field. His obituary stated that "he could be depended upon at all times, and he was honest as they ever get to be, a hard worker for his community and truly a man of God."
