Born in Possum Kingdom, he was the youngest of fourteen and last surviving child of the late James Wesley and Hortense Chasteen Darby. He was a veteran of the US Army from 1953 to 1956 to include his service in the Korean War. He was retired from B.F. Goodrich and a charter member of Grace Baptist Church, Pelzer.
In addition to his devotion to Christ, he had a passion for music, genealogy and his family. Among his musical talents, he was a church organist for thirty-two years. He was thrilled to be able to provide his family with their lineage back to the early 1800s. He was quick to give a warm welcome and laugh to everyone he met.
He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-four years, Martha Ann Wood Darby (83); two children, Kendria Ann Darby Dubis and Carlis DeVeaux Darby; five grandchildren, Amy Dubis, Julie Dubis, Brad Dubis, Taylor Walker and Tristan Ramsey; three great grandchildren, Aydin, Tegan, and Lucas.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 4, 2019, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at Gray Mortuary with the service to follow at 1:30 in the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
