They had four children, Charles Theodore Shields, Lettie Hazel Shields Bolen, Lessy Adeline Shields Badgett, and Brent Buelen Shields.
He died on October 20, 1942, in Burnsides West Virginia, at the age of 64, and was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsboro, October 22, 1942.
