Born in Henderson County, NC; was raised in Buncombe County and was the son of the late Thomas Stanhope Bagwell and Grace Nancy Spivey Bagwell. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Lillie Mae Bagwell, Eldeva Merrill and Ramona Mercer.
He served as a Private in the U.S. Army during World War II.
