On December 8, 2018 Elizabeth Gail Meagher passed away in Escondido, California surrounded by family.

Elizabeth was born on December 27, 1927 to James and Helen (Ferguson) Bunton in Morris, Illinois. She was the second of five children. After her second year of high school her father developed respiratory problems as a result of his service in the First World War. Elizabeth volunteered to take a year away from high school to work in a dry cleaners to help support her family. The work was hard and hot, but she did it willingly and demonstrated qualities that always came naturally to her. One of these qualities was the ability and desire to work hard and accomplish goals. Another of those qualities, which she demonstrated throughout her life, was to think of other’s comfort before her own, especially when the others were family.

After this year of working, her older brother graduated from high school and lifted the responsibility to support the family from Elizabeth. She returned to high school and finished in 1946.

About this time she met a young handsome hard working fun loving fellow that toiled on tug boats and barges on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. Albert Meagher and Elizabeth Bunton were married on July 3, 1948. They settled down in Seneca, Illinois where they raised their two children until they moved to Yakima, Washington in 1964, where they spent the next 51 years together.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, her brothers Donald Bunton and Kenneth Bunton, and her sisters Leone Sutton and Evelyn Joy Umland.

Her friends called her Liz, but she is also known affectionately as Mom, Aunt Liz, Grandma Meagher and by the youngest of the family as Grandma Lizzie.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Chapman; her son-in-law, David Chapman; and their two children, Christopher Chapman (Jeanne) and Jessica Chapman (William Colvin). She is also survived by her son, Gary Meagher, her daughter-in-law, Mary Herber Meagher, and their five children, Leah Swartwout (Michael), Abigail Mason (Carlos Macias-Mason), Nathan Meagher (Ingrid), Daniel Meagher (Rachel), and Ian Meagher (Sheila); as well as 12 great grandchildren: Noah, A.J., Owen, Marisol, Aaden, Luke, Lily, Max, Liam, Mia, Calvin and Micah. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including a dear local niece, Mary Joan Meagher.

A private memorial service for family and close friends will be scheduled at a later date. Instead of sending flowers please consider a donation to The Cottage in the Meadow.
