Willie Alma Brock Rhodes was the fifth of eight children born to James Lee and Clara (Creel) Brock. She was born in Kansas on November 30, 1890. Her mother died when she was only 10, then her father died four years later in 1905. In 1910 she was living with her sister, Della Powelson and her husband in Stafford, Kansas. That same year she met and married the Church of Christ minister, Andrew Jackson (AJ) Rhodes. They were married by his well-known brother, Rev. B. F. Rhodes in May of 1910 in Kansas. When they married, Willie was 19 and Rev. Jackson was bachelor 20 years her senior.

They left Kansas and moved to Oklahoma where their first daughter Wilma (Perry) was born in 1911. By 1914 they were back in Kansas where their second daughter, Pauline (Hoagland) was born. During the early 1920’s Rev. Rhodes ministered at the church in Mulvane, Kansas. In 1925, they were living in Grant, Kansas.

Between 1925 and 1930 they relocated to Denver, Colorado. There he became the minister at the South Sherman Street Church of Christ which was apparently the only Church of Christ church in Denver at the time. Willie greatly assisted her husband in his ministerial duties, even being listed as “Assistant Pastor” in the 1940 census. Rhodes preached there until his death at age 70 in 1941.

Throughout her life, she remained close to her siblings who all stayed in Kansas.

After her husband’s death, Mrs. Rhodes remained close to her daughters, their husbands and two grandchildren. She lived in her home on South Pearl Street in Denver for over 25 years. She was a member of the Park Hill Church of Christ in her later years. She died in November 8, 1972 and was buried next to her husband at Crown Hill Cemetery.
