Leman Brewer Clarkson, 94 year old resident of Grove, Oklahoma, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 27, 2018 at Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Leman was born on October 10, 1924 in Bluejacket, Oklahoma. He was the son of Everett Guy and Dana Abney Clarkson. He attended Afton High School and graduated in 1946 upon his return from active military duty. Leman proudly served 4 years in the US Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946, earning the rank of Gunners Mate 3rd Class aboard the USS Tennessee battleship. Leman married the love of his life, Betty Jean Finnell, on June 23, 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas. They moved to South Bend, Indiana and later Baxter Springs, Kansas before moving to Grove in 1984. It was at that time Leman and Betty joined Grove’s First Baptist Church where they each remained members until being called home.
Leman was a truck driver by occupation, first hauling Studebaker cars for Robert R. Walker Company in South Bend. In 1955 he went to work for Yellow Freight System in Baxter Springs where he retired in 1986 after 31 years, and over 5 million miles, of service. During that time he served 6 years as President of the Teamsters Union (Local 823) in Joplin, Missouri. Leman was a Master Mason at Lodge 76 in Afton Oklahoma, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was an avid bird hunter, a master gardener, a skilled fisherman and he loved his OU Sooners. His proudest achievements were being a Father, Papa and Great-grandfather.
Leman will be reunited in heaven with his wife Betty Clarkson, his eldest son Ronald Clarkson, his great grandson Raysen Rankin, his parents, his brothers Roscoe and Jim Clarkson and his sisters Desma Johnson and Betty Montgomery. He leaves behind his son Rex Clarkson and his wife Mary Dawn, his daughter Tammy Clarkson-Turner and her husband Steve, daughter in-law Sherrie Clarkson, and his brother Manuel Clarkson. Leman was blessed with 7 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren that he loved very much. He was the patriarch of his family and was the greatest example of God’s love to those around him. Life with Leman was, as he would say, “larapin good’. He will be missed immeasurably.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-8 pm, Friday, November 2, 2018 at Grove Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. Services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Grove’s First Baptist Church. Leman will be laid to rest in the GAR Cemetery in Miami, Oklahoma.
