Lillian Groven, 93, of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at the Hillsboro Care Center on December 15, 2018, fifteen days prior to her 94th birthday.
A memorial Service for Lillian will be held on Thursday, December 27 at 2 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Reverend Irvin Schmitke officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at a later date at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Oklee, Minnesota.
Lillian Lorraine Bakke was born to Emil and Unie Jane (Hagen) Bakke on December 30, 1924, near Plummer, Minnesota. She attended a rural elementary school and graduated from Oklee High School in 1942.
On September 11, 1943, Lillian was united in marriage to Halvor Groven, also of Oklee. The couple settled on the Groven home farm, where they lived for the next 44 years. After Halvor’s death, Lillian moved to Thief River Falls.
Lillian always spoke lovingly of her life as a farm wife. She enjoyed hard work, whether it be in the house or outdoors milking cows and doing fieldwork. She thought the farm was the perfect place to raise a family.
Throughout her life, Lillian enjoyed helping others. Over the years, she took care of friends and relatives in their time of need. After moving to Thief River Falls, she spent many hours driving others to appointments and visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes. Probably the volunteer job she loved the most was serving lunch and helping out in the classrooms at St. John Lutheran School. Lillian enjoyed reading, and she traveled extensively, both at home and abroad. She had a strong faith and was always an active participant in church life.
Lillian is survived by daughters Sandra (Craig), and Carol; five grandchildren: Heather (Brent), Sarah (Trevor), Marisa (Tom), Nicholas (Jenna), and Bethany (Joe); eight great grandchildren: Josephine, Sophia, Kyler, Alex, Grady, Reese, Cooper and Vivian; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Lillian in death are her husband, Halvor, and siblings: Gertrude Martinson, Dorothy Spong, Andrew Bakke, Herbert Bakke, Florence Nyland, and infant brother, Elmer.
The family is ever grateful to the staff at Hillsboro Care Center, who lovingly took care of Lillian for the past three years, and to the Hospice staff, who provided compassionate care at the end of her life.
