A memorial service to honor and celebrate the life of Barbara Herndon will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2018 in the River Crest Chapel, Bixby, OK. Barbara passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018 in Tulsa. She was 80.
Born September 18, 1938 in Findlay, Ohio, Barbara was the youngest of three children welcomed by parents Ernest Andrew and Eunice (Gilliam) Herndon. She was also welcomed by a big brother, Clyde and by a big sister, Wanda. As Mr. Herndon found employment with the Skelly Oil Company, Tulsa, Oklahoma became home for the Herndon's and Tulsa is where Barbara attended schools and became a graduate of Tulsa's Central High. While in school, Barbara was a member of the band where she played drums. Music was definitely something that Barbara enjoyed as, throughout her lifetime, she sang in various church choirs and even passed a love of music down to her daughter and granddaughters.
Once finished with high school, Barbara began a long career with the Amerada Hess Company where she worked as a draftsman. She also belonged to the Desk & Derrick Club, as well as, the Daughter's of the American Revolution where she once held the office of Madam Regent.
This once upon a time 'trophy girl' at stock car races was truly one-of-a-kind. In her younger years, Barbara enjoyed bowling. This would later be replaced with taking her grandchildren on trips, spending countless hours researching genealogy and by her duties with the D.A.R.
Sophisticated, proper, proud, patriotic, thoughtful, generous, giving, independent, a bit stubborn, and elegant are all words that have been used to describe Barbara. She was thorough and detailed, even though she left enough room to change her mind a few times along the way.
Barbara often said, "Life is an adventure!" While Barbara has embarked on her new adventure, she would certainly want her family and friends to carry on with as much adventure as they could absolutely pack in.
Those Barbara leaves to cherish her memory include: her daughter, Debi Provencal and husband, Martin; four grandchildren: Lindsey Newman and husband, Daniel; Cassie Drake and husband, Tyler and their children: Addie Mae and Joey Grace; Amy Garrett and Jonathan Provencal; sister, Wanda Downen and a sister-in-law, Virginia Herndon.
She was preceded in death by: her parents and her brother, Clyde.
