Richard G. Young, 81, of Kansas City, died Saturday, December 8, 2018, at North Care Hospice House at North Kansas City Hospital.

Richard was born on September 30, 1937, in Hardin, to Albert Roy and Carrie Lee (Baker) Young. He was united in marriage to Marsha May McCanless, of Hardin, on March 10, 1967. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2018.

Survivors include: two sons, John (Marilyn) Young of Kansas City, and Kevin Young of Kansas City; two daughters, Becki (Brent) Neely of Kansas City, and Debbie (Brian) Dillinger of Cassville; 13 grandchildren, Taylor Edgar (Loren), Megan Young (Drew Gabbert), Peyton Young, Justin Hanson, Emily Jenkins (Dustin), Chloe Young, Blair Quiggle (Jacob), Bobbie Neely, Blake Neely, Joshua Wood, A.J. Wood, Allison Dillinger (Abby), and McKenzie Spindler; 7 great-grandchildren, Breckham Gabbert, Saydee Jenkins, Mason Jenkins, Skylar Jenkins, Avery Clutter, Madeleine Wood, and Alice Quiggle; and numerous extended family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard was reared and educated in Hardin and graduated from the Hardin High School in 1955. After high school, he attended college at Warrensburg and received his degree in Agriculture. After college, he served his country in the United States Airforce for four years. Upon returning from the Airforce, he worked at the Lake City Arsenal where he would meet his future wife. Richard continued working for the Arsenal, until he became head of maintenance for Shirkey’s and then he worked for the Richmond School District. He was best known as part of the Missouri Highway Department Millville Shed Crew and worked for the Missouri Highway Department until he retired. Richard was an active member of his church. He was also an active community member, a Boy Scout leader, and a little league baseball coach. He enjoyed gardening.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street - P.O. Box, Richmond, MO 64085.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery, with full military honors provided by United States Airforce and the Ray County Veterans.
