Mr. Dobbs was a life long resident of Hawkins County and was a member of McPheeters Bend Missionary Baptist Church.
At age 16 James served in C. C. Camp in Salt Lake City, Utah, beginning April 7, 1941. He was discharged from C.C. Camp and enlisted in the United States army. He attended Basic Training at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. James served as Private First Class, Company M, 390th Infantry, APO 98. He was in route to Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Upon arriving in Hawaii, he participated in the repair of the damage incurred during the attack. He proceeded to serve in Tokyo, Japan beginning September 27, 1945. While stationed in Japan, his duties involved serving as Construction Foreman of 300 Japanese civilians. Medals and awards received were the Victory Medal (World War II), Japan, Army of Occupation Medal, Japan, National Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, February, 1944, American Theater Ribbon and Asiatric Pacific Theater Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in Hanshu, Japan on February 19, 1947.
Mr. Dobbs was a retired employee of AFG Industries with 30 years service. He was a member of Church Hill VFW Post # 9754. After his retirement he enjoyed family, friends and farming.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Fannie Cradic Dobbs, Grandson, Bradley Marshall, Sister Margaret Dobbs, brothers, Ray and Ralph Dobbs and many life long friends.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce V. McCracken Dobbs, Church Hill; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Diane Clayton Dobbs, Kingsport; Mark and Teressa Dobbs, Church Hill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Otis Wagers and Angelina and Jimmy Marshall both of Church Hill; six grandchildren, Angie Arnold, Joy Dobbs, Dustin Dobbs, Hillary Dobbs, Ashley Dobbs and David Dobbs; three great grandchildren, Stephanie Marshall, Christina Arnold and Christopher Christian; one brother, Elmer Dobbs, Church Hill; two sisters, Hazel Burton, Church Hill; Helen Lawson, Surgoinsville; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Mark Roberts and the Rev. Maurice Quillen officiating.
Graveside services with military honors conducted by the Hawkins County Color Guard will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at McPheeters Bend Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kermit McCracken, Anthony Housewright, Keith Dobbs, Edmund McCracken, Dustin Dobbs and David Dobbs.
