Mortimore M. Burdick was born September 24, 1842, at Vestabula, Ohio and died July 28, at Scranton, Kansas, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 4 days. He was ill for two or three months and June 5, he went out to the country hoping to regain his health, and it was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Hickerson that he passed away. They cared for him and did everything that earthly friends and hands could do, but the One who giveth and the one that taketh away, said, “come”, your work is finished. He is missed by all but not forgotten. He was the thirteenth child of the fourteen children of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Burdick. In the early years of life he went to Nebraska, and settled on a farm and was one of the pioneers, and there he spent the greater part of his life. He was postmaster at Steven, Nebraska for twelve years, resigning when he came to Scranton in 1919 to be near his sister, Mrs. Louisa Hazeltine, the only one left of the fourteen children. He was a veteran of the Civil war, and was loyal to his country as well as to his God. He gave his heart to God when he was 40 years of age, and was a faithful follower of God, his greatest pleasure was to read his Bible and talk of his Savior. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Louisa Hazeltine; Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Hickerson and family and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hazeltine and son. He was loved by all who knew him, for his love and kind deeds. Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Louisa Hazeltine, July 30, 1926 at 2:00 p.m. in charge of Mrs. Lottie Peters, of Ottumwa, Ia., and the remains were laid to rest in the Scranton Cemetery. 5 Aug 1926 Scranton Gazette
