Daniel Ernest Chamness, 87 of Tyler, died January 2, 2014.

He was born December 11, 1926, in Galveston, the son of Daniel E. Chamness and Clara Schumann Chamness. He was the grandson of Texas artist Paul Richard Schumann.

He graduated from Marion High School in Southern Illinois and one semester at UT Austin before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy during the second World War. His strong background in science and electronics put him into a special Navy training program to work on radar equipment that was new at the time. Following the war, he resumed his studies at UT Austin.

On June 24, 1949, he married the love of his life Gloria Hewitt.

He received a medical degree from UTMB in Galveston in 1952, completed his medical internship in the Navy, and then completed his residency in neurology and psychiatry in 1957. In 1959 he set up his private practice in Tyler and remained in Tyler throughout his medical career.

Survivors include his sister Pauline Chamness of Fairbanks, Alaska and brother Robert Chamness of Nashua, New Hampshire. He is also survived by four children including his son Dan Chamness and wife Martha of Lindale, daughter Susan Chamness-Jones and husband Sam of Nohen, Germany, daughter Carol Allen and husband Peter of Whitehouse, and daughter Liz Chamness of Tyler. He also had five grandchildren.

Dan also had very fond memories of his early childhood in Marion including his attendance at the Chamnesstown School which is now part of Crab Orchard Lake National Wildlife Refuge. He often said that little school (grades 1-8) was the best school he ever attended.
