John Heth was a businessman in Chesterfield County. He was born around 1798, the fourth child and second son of Col. Henry 'Harry' Heth and Nancy Hare. He served in the War of 1812 as a midshipman in the US Navy. Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr. was imprisoned in Bermuda with him. Heth resigned in 1822 to marry Margaret Pickett, the daughter of George E. Pickett and Margaret Flint. Margaret Pickett was the aunt of Confederate Major General George E. Pickett, made famous by Pickett's Charge. They had eleven children together, including CSA Major General Henry 'Harry' Heth, who started the Battle of Gettysburg. He was an active coal mine owner in Chesterfield County and incorporated both the Black Heath Company of Colliers and the Chesterfield Coal and Iron Mining Company. His house, known as Black Heath, was a large mansion that he inherited from his father. John Heth died at Norwood Plantation after a short illness of consumption.
