From: "Lincoln County, It's People" by Yvonne McGlothin:

"Colonel William Gwin was born in the state of Tennessee. He moved to Lawrence County, MS (now Lincoln) when only a small boy.

He was first married in the beginning of manhood and his first wife soon died. He was again married Dec. 30, 1830 to Miss Sarah Sutton. There were born to them 17 children, 5 boys and 12 girls.

Col. Gwin was truly a patriotic citizen, taking a deep interest in all that pertained to the welfare of his country. He filled several offices during his lifetime..Lost two sons in the Civil War; Joined the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and was baptized about 51 years ago." Also: In 1861 he was elected to the Secession Convention over the brilliant F. T. Cooper.

He is a first cousin of Wm. M. Gwin, ex senator of California who recently died in New York City. His father was a noted Methodist Minister and a favorite of General Andrew Jackson.
