June was born in 1915 in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, to Clifford Romig and wife Eliza Marvella (Simmers) Romig. She had older brothers Jess and Francis, and younger brother William Robert (Bob) Romig. She attended college in Quincy Massachusetts and married Ivan Beckwith in Quincy in 1943. She and her husband had five children: Carolyn, Robert, Nancy, Susan, and Tyler.
