"The LaFayette Sun" - July 29, 1931:

Moorefield - Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Daughtry, Mrs. Slaton and Mr. Marvin Jemison, of Columbus, Ga., stopped a while Thursday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Hill and told of the death of Mrs. Clay Daughtry, of Thomaston, Ga., where on a visit to their son, Tommie Daughtry and Mrs. Daughtry died suddenly. She had been in bad health for some years. She leaves husband, one son and four stepchildren, one sister, Mrs. Sallie Davis, of LaFayette. She was a good woman and was loved by all who knew her. The remains were brought from Columbus Thursday and buried at Macedonia Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones and point them to Him who knows how to comfort the sad hearted.

In Memory.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Daughtrey, nee Bartlette, was born June 19, 1859. The third of a family of four children and the baby girl she shared honors as household pet with her younger brother. Quiet, obedient and pleasant, she was the light of the home for many years. At nineteen she united with Rock Springs Missionary Baptist Church and was a faithful member for fourteen years, then joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Macedonia, and was a loyal member the rest of her life.
She was married to H. C. Daughtrey about 1894. She proved herself a devoted wife and a mother to his four small children. As the years passed she became "Ma" alike to these, her own son and grandson and daughter-in-law. It was indeed beautiful to see the devotion that united all as one family.
"Miss Lizzie" was known over this county, parts of Tallapoosa and of Georgia, and known by all as a good neighbor and true friend.
She suffered a stroke of paralysis in 1929 and never recovered her health, and had another stroke the next year. She wrote her sister, Mrs. Sarah Davis, that she was afraid she would not see her again, and that no one could know how she suffered, but she was ready to go when her Lord called.
Her home was in Thomaston, Ga., and she was on a visit to her step son in Phoenix (sic) when the call came. On July 31 (sic) as all sat talking together her last stroke came and she never revived, but died almost instantly.
The funeral was held at Macedonia, where a large crowd and many floral offerings showed in some measure the esteem in which she was held. Mr. T. J. Sims, a former neighbor, led the services. Rev. B. B. McGinty and Elder Hawkins paid respectful tribute to her memory and spoke words of comfort to the bereaved in two short discourses.
How often when we were children and Aunt Mollie (sic) came to visit us, she would slip away home lest we cry for her. And now, again, as gently as she lived among us she has slipped away with no word of farewell. But we know where and with whom she has gone, and that we shall meet and rove together once more in pleasant places.
