Mr. Sam Miller Colvett, age, 94, passed from this life on November 26, 2018 in Temple, Texas. At his side was his wife of almost 72 years, Betty and other family members.

He was born to Maude Cooke Colvett and D.A. (Fon) Colvett on November 10, 1924 in Crockett County, Tennessee. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Marcell Hopper and a brother, David Darence Colvett.

Sam and Betty (Robbins) Colvett were married on December 4, 1946 and made Alamo, Tennessee home their entire life. They are blessed with 6 children: Janice Tillery of Lewisville, TX; Linda Steed (Tom) of Hoover, AL; Bruce Colvett of Jackson, TN; Kent Colvett of Alamo, TN; Camille Cox (David ) of Temple TX; and Dr. Kyle Colvett (Mary) of Piney Flats, TN. They also have 23 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was proud of each and every one.

Instilled with a strong work ethic by his father, Sam helped support his family from an early age. Before he was a teen, Sam followed a team of horses to make a crop on the family farm, helping his father who had lost a leg in a train accident. In addition to the farming life and in-between crops, Sam learned construction while working with his uncles and cousins building custom homes. At the onset of WWII, Sam helped construct the U.S. Naval Airbase at Millington, TN. Later in life he moved into commercial construction, building many of the major manufacturing plants in and around Jackson, Tennessee area. If these jobs and skills were not enough, Sam completed the I.R.S. tax school in 1942, preparing over 600 returns for individuals and businesses plus other associated documents each year. He retired from this at a mere 90 years of age, having worked some 72 years! In his late 80’s Sam was named the “Outstanding Older Worker” for the State of Tennessee and represented the state in recognition and award ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

Sam’s greatest legacy however, is that he was a faithful Christian, as is his wife, their children, their children’s children, and their children. If he were home and well, he would be found at every service of the Cairo Church of Christ, the congregation of his parents, where he brought his bride, and raised his children.

His family and friends knew him by his wit and sense of humor. He enjoyed telling a joke or story as well as the smile or laughs it brought. He leaves us with this gift to our memories.

Arrangements are with Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo, TN. Visitation will be at Ronk on November 30, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on December 1, at 11:00 am at Cairo Church of Christ, NW of Alamo off Hwy 412 at 143 Lyons Road. Tom Steed will be officiating. Memorials may be made to: Cairo cemetery Fund or NOAH.
