Lillie Rebecca Shoemake, age 80, of Rockdale passed from this life during the afternoon hours of Friday, November 23, 2018 at the VA Hospital in Temple. She was born on the 17th day of June 1938 in Houston, Texas.

In her earlier years Lillie would enlist in to the United States Air Force and train to become an Air Force medical attendant. She spent two years in the Air Force before leaving the service to start a family. She married Donald Shoemake in Richmond, Texas on October 30, 1963. They would spend their time together in each other’s company until Donald’s passing in 1997. Lillie was a graduate of Aldine High School in Houston and had attended the University of Houston. She was an active member in Houston’s North Side Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years. She was a Milam County 4-H leader and was instrumental in reviving the Aldine 4-H club (Harris County) in 1980 and the Milam County 4-H Horse Club/Horse Judging Teams in the 1980's. When she was a youth she showed champion Milking Shorthorns. She remained active helping her daughters and granddaughters in livestock and horse showing arenas for many years. She was known to keep many goats and even carry them in her car from time to time. Lillie was a joy to be around and would bring a smile to your face anytime you got the opportunity to speak with her.

Lillie is preceded in death by her husband Donald as well as her adopted parents Thomas and Pearl (Calley) Laymance, biological parents Thomas Douglas and Margaret (Wells) Laymance, and 1 grandson Thomas Cruz.

She leaves behind her 2 daughters, Lorna Gibson of Rockdale and Roxane Cantrell of Davilla as well as 1 brother Charles Jones of Nacogdoches, 5 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Bartlett with Pastor Rich Cromwell officiating. Her ashes were buried at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery in Buckholts.
