Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company A, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 2, 1863). His citation reads "Was 1 of 6 volunteers who charged upon a log house near Devil's Den, where a squad of the enemy's sharpshooters were sheltered, and compelled their surrender". His Medal was issued February 16, 1897. The five other 6th Pennsylvania Reserve soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor for this action were Thaddeus Smith, J. Levi Roush, Chester S. Furman, James W. Hart and Wallace Johnson.
