Eugene Alvin Shumate, 84, of Solgohachia, died Sunday, May 20, 2007. He was born on Nov. 19, 1922, in Greenbrier, a son of Alvin Ross Shumate and Verna (Potts) Shumate.

He was a self-employed cattle farmer and raised fox hounds. He was a World War II veteran where he was McArthur's head cook.

He was the widower of Azalee Shumate.

Survivors include two sons, Eddie Shumate of Eatonton, GA., and Raymond Shumate of Sevierville, TN; one brother, A.R. Shumate of Missouri; one sister, Shirley K. Ragsdale of Missouri; six grandchildren; and five great-grandcildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Bob Neal and Sons Chapel in Morrilton with Jonathan Lee Shumate and Eddie Gene Shumate officiating. Burial will be at McNew Cemetery near Greenbrier.
