George Rowe, son of James and Charlotte Rowe, was born at Bramfield, England December 20, 1848 and died at his home near Scranton, Kansas, December 12, 1925 at the age of seventy-six years, eleven months and twenty-two days.

At the age of five he came with his parents to the United States, settling at Cincinnatti, Ohio. He remembered well the awful storm he encountered on the sea enroute to America, the water coming over the hatches of the ship which was driven 2000 miles from the course and six long weeks ensuing before reaching port.

From Cincinnatti the family moved to Morehill, Indiana. George Rowe later moved to the town of Newberg, Iowa. January 15, 1882 he married Miss Esther Stevens, of Morehill, Indiana.

In the spring of 1884 they moved with their little son Elmer to Scranton, Kansas, settling on their farm north of Asbury Church shortly after.

Mrs. Rowe died February 20, 1893, leaving four small children to the care of the father.

This was a heavy blow to Mr. Rowe as Mrs. Rowe had been a most devoted wife and mother, a woman of great lovliness of character and her loss was an untold misfortune to her family as well as a loss to the entire neighborhood.

The day before he was taken ill Mr. Rowe drove his own car to Burlingame and Scranton and seemed to be in the best of health and spirits.

At midnight, his little grandson went over to Everette's and told them grandfather was sick. He passed away Saturday morning about half past ten after an illness of only thirty-six hours.

He leaves to mourn the loss of a loving and devoted father four children: Elmer and Everette, of Scranton, Kansas, Mrs. Edith Schmitthenner, of Topeka; and Samuel, of Illinois. The following grandchildren; Earl Rowe, of Scranton; Florence, Mabel, Chester, Carl, and Edith Schmitthenner, Topeka; Roger, Beulah, Ralph and Harold Rowe, Scranton; Janette Rowe of Richmond, Mo., and George Rowe who was staying with his grandfather, one sister, Mrs. Charlotte Dunlap, of Waterloo, Iowa; nephews and nieces beside a host of friends.

Mr. Rowe for over forty years has been one of the outstanding men of the Asbury-Scranton community. He was the soul of honorable in all his business dealings, a friend to all in need and beloved by all who knew him.

He served for seven years as director of Rubow school district; also as trustee of Fairfax township, the office being practically forced upon him by his friends and neighbors.

He was also a member of the Highland Grange.

The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon, by Rev. W. B. Fisher, of Topeka.
