Funeral services for Nettie Jane Hayes, 85, who passed away at her home in south Globe Sunday, will be held from the First Baptist Church of Globe Friday at 4:00 p.m. The Rev. R.O. Douglass will officiate.
She is survived by two sons, Virgil and Jesse G., five daughters, Lillie Higgins, Dallas Robinson, Ides McInturff, Una Phillips, and Willie Gatway; twenty grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and a number of sisters and brothers.
Born in Tennessee during the Civil War, her birth occurred when her father, a Confederate soldier, was engaged in fighting on a nearby battleground.
Spending her childhool days in her native state, she then moved to Texas where she met and married her husband, the late William C. Hayes. Moving westward with her husband, she lived in New Mexico for four years. She arrived in Globe in 1891, and has resided at the place of her death ever since.
A charter member of the First Baptist Church, she gave generously to finance the construction of the present edifice and to the church's continuous operational expense.
For many years she held extensive grazing leases on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and accumulated considerable money from the sale of cattle.
A great friend of underprivileged people, she gave away large sums to their support. she entertained the theory that no material goods could be taken when death occurred, and that the accumulation of estates often caused ill-will among people, so she planned her life accordingly.
