John was the son of Charles and Anna Ady. Born in Pennsylvania to German immigrants, he was raised mostly in Illinois and married Lena Ady. In January of 1930, during the Great Depression, John went west in search of work. He found employment in rural Utah with the Spring Canyon Coal Mining Company but contracted influenza within a few weeks of his arrival. He died Feb. 5, 1930 at the mining camp's infirmary. His body was sent back to Illinois by train for burial.
