Glenn was born July 22, 1925 to Glenn and Viola (Howard) Betts in Clinton, Iowa. He was raised in Port Byron, IL. Glenn left high school to join the Army in 1943. He served in Italy until 1945. When he returned home, he worked with his family at their gas station in Port Byron.
Through a friend of his mother's, he began writing to the woman who would become his wife. Alpha was from Nebraska. Alpha's sister was his mother's friend. Glenn and Alpha wrote through his time in Italy and continued when he returned home. Soon after his return, Glenn was in an almost fatal car accident. This stopped the letters for a short time but soon Alpha came to Port Byron to meet Glenn. In early June 1947, Glenn, his parents, Alpha's sister and her husband, drove to Nebraska to bring Alpha back to Illinois so they could be married.
Glenn married Alpha Dexter on June 14, 1947 in Port Byron, Illinois. She preceded him in death in July 2011. They lived a short time in Port Byron but spent the majority of their married life in Silvis, Illinois.
Through the years, Glenn worked at International Harvester, Rock River Dairy, ALCOA, Niabi Zoo and the Moline School District. He was proud he could always support his family and allow his wife to be a homemaker. Their first house in Silvis was 2 rooms with no plumbing. Glenn and Alpha worked tirelessly to remodel the house to accommodate them and their two children, Glenda and Robert.
Glenn was active with Robert in the Boy Scouts. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 421 in Port Byron. He was a member of St. Mark's Anglican Church. He enjoyed woodworking. He was a Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls fan. In 2003, he received an honorary high school diploma from Riverdale High School in Port Byron. He was proud to announce to anyone that he passed his driver's test in July 2020.
Glenn is survived by his children, Glenda (Alejo) Zamora, Moline, Robert (Marsheila) Betts, Galesburg, IL; grandchildren, Virginia Gray, Melissa Sutton, Jessica Zamora, Lauren Eurales, Stuart Betts; and great-grandchildren, Kyle & Ian Gray, Emily Davis, and Ryan Morgan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alpha, and his parents.
