Capt. Brooks Killed Aboard C. & O. Craft
Chesapeake and Ohio railway tugboat master, Capt. James Edward Brooks Sr., 67, was killed yesterday apparently when he fell from the top of a car being transported on the float. He is believed to have suffered a fractured skull in the drop from the top of the car.
Capt. Brooks, a native of Mathews county, was a member of the Parkview Methodist church, Portsmouth, and the Masters, Mates and Pilots Association. And the body was sent to the Snelling funeral home, Portsmouth, pending funeral arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Abbie Irene Brooks; one daughter, Mrs. J. L. Howard of Portsmouth; two sons, J. Frank Brooks, USMS; Elmer L. Brooks of Portsmouth, and one sister, Mrs. George Hudgins, of Mathews county.
