Max L. Bach, age 81, a man who could be fondly referred to as “Mr. Gilman, IA”, left this earthly life on the morning of Friday, November 9, 2018 with family at his side at the Israel Hospice Home in Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 at the Gilman United Methodist Church with Pastor Cheryl Ridenour officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown.

Born on May 8, 1937, on the family farm near Rhodes, IA, he was one of three children born to Lester and Rosella (Meyer) Bach. Max graduated from Collins High School in 1955 and soon enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves.Max was united in marriage to Janet Mitchell in 1961. They were blessed with three wonderful children together- Kandie, Lisa and Norm, later divorcing. Max then married Karen Trager on February 16, 1985, with that union, she and her son Larry made the family complete.

Max was employed for 38 ½ years at Fisher Controls in machine maintenance until retiring in December of 1999.Gilman was home, a place he was proud of and supported in every endeavor. He served as mayor, city councilman, trustee and member of the Gilman United Methodist Church. He was passionate about the positive impact of Boy Scouting and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow at Camp Mitigwa, past District Commissioner, Silver Beaver Award recipient and a past dedicated leader of Troop’s #309/329 in Gilman/LeGrand.

Max enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities, fishing in Canada, keeping busy doing projects around the house in the “Fix it Max’s Way”, watching East Marshall activities and especially time spent with family and friends. In 1994, he and Karen designed and built their log home.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 33 years, Karen, children- Kandie (Jeff) Eversult, Lisa (Don) Mustard, Norm (Alicia) Bach and Larry (April) Trager; grandchildren- Amber and Adam Mustard (Racel), Jeremy and Kourtney Eversult, Molly Bach, Carter Trager (fiancée Nicole Benson) and Hannah Gregory; great-grandson Kamden Eversult and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

In death, Max rejoined his parents, sister, Alma Coleman-Rogers; brother, Richard; brothers-in-law, Russell Coleman and Richard Rogers; one nephew, David Coleman and one grandson, Matthew Trager.
