Civil War∼James William Kidd was a Private 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Company A, Civil War. At the time of his enrollment 1 November 1862, he was age 29, 5 ft. 8 in. tall, dark complextion, blue eyes, dark hair, and a farmer by occupation. He mustered into the service 27 January 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tn. Captured by the Forrest troops at Sulphur Branch Trestle, Al., 25 September 1864 and placed in Cahaba Prison. He was paroled 21 April 1865 and loaded onto the steamship Sultana. He died in the explosion of the boiler, 7 miles north of Memphis on the Mississippi River. His mother, Mary M. Kidd, drew a pension on his Civil War service.
