She worked 38 years as a legal secretary at the former Schroeder and Schroeder law office in Rock Island and in earlier years she taught at the former Rock Island Business College.
1987 she won the annual senior citizen spelling bee, a contest for people in nursing centers in eastern Iiowa and western Illinois.
Zelda Schmitt died age 78 at Silver Cross Nursing Center.
